The Playground

This morning I met my twins group at a local playground. I've been to TONS of playgrounds with Gavin and Emery and it's always been somewhat of a challenge to keep both of them safe, but today took it to a new level. They're usually somewhat timid on the play structures. Emery is always more fearless than Gavin, but she's also more sure-footed. For some reason today all remaining fear went out the window for both of them. They were going up and down (and up and down) the stairs alone, Emery was sliding all by herself, and they were running from me when I'd try to stand nearby to catch them if they fell. Emery was doing her combination Riverdance/ Flashdance footwork in the open, elevated area and was running and jumping. This was making me crazy because there are openings all around that she could have fallen through. She's been able to jump with both feet off of the ground for a couple of months now, so she spends a lot of time practicing. The highlight of the morning was when Gavin decided that he could also slide all by himself, so he literally dove headfirst down the slide. I was up on top of the play structure with both of them at the time, so I had to lunge down the slide and catch him by a shoe! If I wouldn't have caught him, he would've taken a nice 2 foot drop onto his face at the bottom of the slide. This was a fairly short, straight slide without the "slow down" area at the bottom. They definitely kept me on my toes! I know I probably need to back off a little and not be so nervous, but after Gavin's little stunt I'm going to be all over them for a little while longer! I'm sure they'll be climbing all over the place by the end of summer.

The funny thing about a twin playgroup is how much the twin toddlers completely ignore each other. It's interesting to watch. When Gavin tried to play with the other kids, they wanted nothing to do with him and cried about him being near them. One of the moms commented that you'd think they would share and play together better since they are twins. I think twins just learn to watch their backs. Sometimes they just need a break from sharing their space. :-)

Have a good weekend! I'm headed out to buy Easter eggs and stuff to fill them. Let the Easter festivities begin!
